Depression is in the air: understanding the interplay between air pollution, biological variables and depressive disorder
AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is a known environmental risk factor for human health. Exposure to air pollution is associated with various diseases, and recent scientific studies also support its relationship with psychiatric disorders such as depression.
BIOLOGICAL FACTORS
Recent studies have shown that exposure to environmental factors can cause the onset or exacerbation of depressive disorder in individuals with biological vulnerability.
MAJOR DEPRESSIVE DISORDER
Major depressive disorder is a psychiatric condition that affects up to 10% of the general population over their lifetime, with a frequency twice as high in women than in men.
The DeprAir Study
The DeprAir study is based on the hypothesis that exposure to air pollution in individuals with Major Depressive Disorder may influence and worsen their condition.
The study aims to assess how air pollution can contribute to an unfavorable course of the depressive disorder as a consequence of biological changes due to exposure to poor air quality. .
